December 2022 Newsletter

A Note from our President –

Things are starting to move into high gear with the countdown to Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas underway.  So, my annual gift to you is this advice:  Let go of just a little this year, and take more time for you!  If only I can follow my own advice!  Join us at all, or some of the wonderful activities we’ve planned—they’re guaranteed to relieve a little stress, put you in the holiday spirit and help you touch base with busy old and new friends.

WINTER WALKERS: Wednesdays, December 14th, 11:00AM—MOA 

West main entrance 1st floor

We will be walking and window shopping on the 2nd Wednesday of each of these winter months only. Get out of the house and enjoy ice-free walking with other Wanderers indoors at the Mall of America.  Walk whatever your speed from 11 am to noon. 

We will start at the West main entrance of the FIRST floor; there should be lockers there per the website. Join us at any point finishing on the FIRST floor at noon (same starting point) where we will adjourn to Crave for lunch; join us there even if you chose not to walk.

Little Women: The Musical   Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, follow the adventures of the famous sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March.  A civil war drama, this captivating story tells, in colorful music, of personal discovery, heartache, hope and love. This musical is presented in an intimate 136-seat theater.

A carpool for Ike’s will leave at 2:30PM from the north parking lot behind Kohl’s Knollwood.

Directions to Kohl’s Knollwood Carpool Site—8440 Hwy. 7 France to 62 Crosstown W about 5 miles to 169 N. Proceed about 3 miles to Hwy. 7 E. Turn RIGHT on Aquilla Ave. Kohl’s is on your left. We will be at rear store exit near the corner of W 36th & Aquila. 

Directions to Mtka. Theatre at Mika. High School— 18285 Hwy. 7 France to 62 Crosstown W about 5 miles to 169 N. Proceed about 3 miles to Hwy.7 W. Continue 5 miles and turn LEFT to County Road 101 S. In two blocks, turn RIGHT to Old Excelsior Blvd. Continue to Delton Ave. Turn LEFT into the front parking lot. Additional parking west of the school.

Directions to Ike’s—17805 Hwy. 7 (two blocks from the high school) From France take #62 Crosstown W about 5 miles to #169 N. Proceed about 3 miles to Hwy. 7 W. Continue five miles and turn LEFT to County Road 101 South.  Turn RIGHT on Hutchins Drive, and in about two blocks RIGHT (commercial street). Ike’s parking lot is on the left.

The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See (historical fiction)

Set on the Korean island of Jeju, The Island of Sea Women follows Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls from very different backgrounds, as they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective. Over many decades—through the Japanese colonialism of the 1930s and 1940s, World War II, the Korean War, and the era of cellphones and wet suits for the women divers—Mi-ja and Young-sook develop the closest of bonds.
