Lynn Johnson is organizing a monthly movie outing. Lynn would select a movie in advance at AMC, St. Louis Park Mann or Edina (based on the reviews) and email the title and time to the group several days ahead. Since several theaters* in the area offer $5 flicks on Tuesdays, we’ll start there. Post-matinee the FUN would include Happy Hour to visit and discuss the show.

In this tightly wound story, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…..

Need motivation to get out, move, and beat that cabin fever? Join us for an hour (3 laps) of walking inside Southdale–or as much as your schedule and legs allow. Gather at the Hennepin County Service Center located on the East side Door #13. Be on time–we’ll start walking promptly!  

AFTERNOON WALKING CLUB: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30PM—Southdale Center

We’re the “non-morning” people who like to lounge a bit before we really get going.  By 2:30 we’re roaring to go! Meet us at the bench by Ruby Tuesday restaurant.  Covered parking is right outside the door—West side of Southdale.  We’ve got slow and fast walkers. We’ll pair you up with someone your speed to go as long or far as you’d like.

Their purples, silvers and whites celebrate the BIG GAME–in flowers.  Admission is free.  We’ll be there in time for the Gardener Talk at 1:00PM when we’ll meet the gardeners, who feature a different topic daily. Hear about the day-to-day operations of running the Conservatory, the plants and their care–plus ask questions.

“Ridiculous, charming, adorable, hilarious.”  In The Nutcracker’s Nuts residents of the Simon’s Rest retirement community are tired of the same boring production of “The Christmas Carol.” Scrooge can’t remember his lines any more, and Tiny Tim is six feet tall. When they lose their director, they pick a new script and plan a production of “The Nutcracker.” When the residents discover it has a ballet, it’s too late to back out — the show is sold out and the show must go on! “Think of it as you’re only chance to see the Nutcracker performed with walkers!  It’s a real crowd pleaser–especially the second act’s ‘ballet’.”

Between 1854 and 1929, so-called orphan trains ran regularly from the cities of the East Coast to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by pure luck. Would they be adopted by a kind and loving family, or would they face a childhood and adolescence of hard labor and servitude?

As a young Irish immigrant, Vivian Daly was one such child, sent by rail from New York City to an uncertain future a world away. Returning east later in life, Vivian leads a quiet, peaceful existence on the coast of Maine, the memories of her upbringing rendered a hazy blur. Miss Hazel & the Rosa Parks League by Jonathan Odell  is set  in pre-Civil Rights Mississippi, and inspired by his Mississippi childhood, Jonathan Odell tells the story of two young mothers, Hazel and Vida – one wealthy and white and the other poor and black – who have only two things in common: the devastating loss of their children, and a deep and abiding loathing for one another.
Embittered and distrusting, Vida is harassed by Delphi’s racist sheriff and haunted by the son she lost. Hazel, too, has lost a son and can’t keep a grip on her fractured life. After drunkenly crashing her car into a manger scene while gunning for the baby Jesus, Hazel is sedated and bed-ridden. Hazel’s husband hires Vida to keep tabs on his unpredictable wife and to care for his sole surviving son. Forced to spend time together with no one else to rely on, the two women find they have more in common than they thought, and together they turn the town on its head. It is the story of a town, a people, and a culture on the verge of a great change that begins with small things, like unexpected friendship.

Our Noon tour explores the Nordic holiday traditions practiced across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Romania. This year’s theme is Fest! Merry Mansion. The City View Grille is an on-campus restaurant operated by the Saint Paul College Culinary Arts program. It has a view of Downtown St. Paul, the State Capitol, and the Cathedral of St. Paul. GARDEN TOUR: Friday & Saturday, August 4th-5th—New Ulm

There are still a couple spots left for the New Ulm trip August 4th and 5th, 2017.  If you are interested please email me at BarbaraD@TheWanderersMSP.org and I will also send you a copy of the itinerary.  We think it will be a really fun time and hope you will join us. We’ve booked an AirBnB (an entire house with no food provided).  There are 8 beds (which they say could accommodate up to 12 people.  We would only allow more then 8 if someone is willing to share a bed.).  The number of people going will determine the final cost per person for the night – if we have 8 people the cost would be $70 plus tax. We need a $50.00 deposit ASAP if you are planning to attend.

Billie Breslin has traveled far from her home in California to take a job at Delicious!, New York’s most iconic food magazine. When Delicious! is abruptly shut down Billie agrees to stay on in the empty office, maintaining the hotline for reader complaints. To her surprise, the lonely job leads to miraculous discovery. In a hidden room she finds a cache of WWII era letters from Lulu Swan, a plucky twelve-year-old, to the legendary chef James Beard. Lulu’s letters provide Billie with a richer understanding of history, and a feeling of deep connection to the young writer whose courage in the face of hardship inspires Billie to comes to terms with her fears, her big sister and her ability to open her heart to love.
Beverages at happy hour prices are available until 7:00 pm.  Feel free to bring food or snacks up form the store.  Weather permitting we’ll be out on the deck. Please come even if you haven’t read the book.

5300 Whiting Ave, Edina, MN.  

Specializing in hostas—with 100’s of varieties to see in their beautiful Display Gardens—they offer mail order and on-site sales of shade-loving plants. Awarded the 2015 Edina Heritage Award, they have been growing hosta’s since 1946. This is their last year at this site.

We will have a potluck salad luncheon at a nearby member’s home following our tour.  Meet there to drop off food and then carpool to the Garden. Or, meet us at the Garden at 10:45AM.

Join us as we walk around Centennial Lakes.  Spring has sprung – so meet us at the “Big Clock” outside of the Hughes Pavilion.  Walk around the lake or as much or as little as your legs allow. Be on time–we’ll start walking promptly!  If it rains – we meet at Southdale outside the Hennepin Country Service Center.

The market is open from 3-7PM. Shop before or after we gather at 5PM on Lou Nanne’s patio. HH prices run until 6PM—we’ll stick around until at least 7PM. Meet in the main DR if there’s rain.

TRIP TO NEW ULM: Is anyone interested in an August day trip or overnight to New Ulm–possibly a Friday?  We’d tour the August Schell Brewery, the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the nation.  They have gorgeous gardens with peacocks strutting about, arbors, roses, annual and perennial beds.  Plus, New Ulm has fun restaurants, lots of cute shops to wander thru and of course we can’t forget about the Hermann the German monument.
