OUTDOOR WINTER FUN:

We’re Minnesotans—let’s have some fun outdoors this winter!  

Cross Country Skiing—-Do you have your own equipment?  If so, we can ski at Braemar golf course or your favorite place. You can rent at Hyland Lake Park Preserve in Bloomington. 

Snowshoeing—Woodlake Nature Center in Richfield is a fine place to snowshoe this winter.  Rentals available.   Let me know if you want to ski and/or snowshoe and I’ll arrange an outing for us.

We will be walking and window shopping on the 2nd Wednesday of each of these winter months only. Get out of the house and enjoy ice-free walking with other Wanderers indoors at the Mall of America.  Walk whatever your speed from 11 am to noon. We will start at the West main entrance of the FIRST floor; there should be lockers there per the website. Join us at any point finishing on the FIRST floor at noon (same starting point) where we will adjourn to Crave for lunch; join us there even if you chose not to walk.

A carpool leaves the east side parking lot of the Southtown AMF Bowling Alley at 1:45 PM. Please indicate if you plan to carpool or meet us there. 

If you drive: go around to the west side of the building (overlooking 35W) and park farther back if possible—keep closer rows open for Food Shelf clients. Enter through Door 2 on the west side marked “VEAP Volunteers and Staff.” Wear closed-toed shoes.

Take a trip back to 1973 with the Irish Catholic O’Shea family.  This boisterous and moving new memory play introduces us to young Linda as she recalls a week she’ll never forget. When Linda’s mother instructs her to tell her sister about the birds and the bees, things quickly snowball into a potential crisis after the conversation is overheard by the parish priest. Secrets are unintentionally revealed, and a quick-witted group of women realize what really matters as they work to protect their family reputation and each other. This wild and tender comedy explores the foolishness of first love and ultimately the power of family.

Joining us at 11:30AM for lunch is optional.  Otherwise, meet us at the theater at 12:45AM

Enjoy a break from winter and riveting classical music at a memorable 11:00AM concert in downtown Minneapolis. Afterward we’ll cross the Mall for a savory British lunch at Brit’s Pub.

“French pianist Alexandre Kantorow, 2019 winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, performs Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto. Japanese conductor Kazuki Yamada makes his debut leading the Orchestra in Tōru Takemitsu’s breathtaking piece, How Slow the Wind, also receiving its first performance here, before taking the Orchestra and audience through Dvořák’s New World Symphony.”

COST: $29 for Senior groups of 10 or more.  Otherwise, individual tickets are $35 to $78 main floor around row 7.  I need to know if 10 people are going by February 5th  to call and get the group rate.

  3. Skyway-connected 11th Street public ramp 
  4. Coffee Concert Coach Bus from the Southdale Library.  $20 plus your concert ticket. Bus tickets can be ordered when you purchase the concert ticket. Leaves at 9:15AM, returns by 1:45PM.
  5. Drive up valet—at the 11th Street main Hall entrance and must be preordered. $25 It’s available 90 minutes before the concert but only ½ hour after the concert. May be purchased up to 24 hours before concert.

Join a docent-led tour of this unique museum. Of special interest is CAPTURING THE PRISTINE: UKRAINIAN- MINNESOTA ARTIST USTIMCHUK, which captures awesome renderings of Northern Minnesota landscapes. Their permanent exhibits include works from Armenia to Uzbekistan. Much of the art work is large-sized and you can get quite close to each work.

LOAVES AND FISHES: Saturdays, December 3rd, 1/7, 2/4 and 3/4, 3:30-5:00PM—-Wooddale Lutheran Church 2120 West 76th Street, Richfield, MN 55423 (across street from Best Buy HQ)
Loaves and Fishes first provided meals to Minnesotans in 1982 at the Dorothy Day Center and St. Stephen’s. By the end of 2020 it had served 4,454,745 fresh meals in several MN locations.

On the first Saturday of every winter month we will help prepare donated fresh foods in the following ways: Cutting veggies and fresh fruit, seasoning and preparing primary proteins and starches. Once prepared we place the fresh foods into 150 to-go boxes. (They may convert to in-house serving at a later date.) Aprons, gloves and hair nets provided as are sharp knives and cooking utensils. No heavy lifting is required and you don’t have to serve the prepared food. You do not need to stay for clean-up.

We only need 4 people per date and will do Happy Hour/dinner at Lucky 13 afterwards. Other Wanderers are welcome to join us for dinner.

VEAP is a basic needs organization whose programs include access to healthy foods, social services, housing stability and supportive services. 

We will work at the VEAP food shelf from 2:15-5:15. Training is provided. Our commitment to VEAP is the first Tuesday, every other month: October 4, December 6, February 7. April 4.

We will have dinner/Happy Hour at Lucky 13 Pub near Southtown after our service.

A carpool leaves the east side parking lot of the Southtown AMF Bowling Alley at 1:45 PM. Please indicate if you plan to carpool or meet us there. This show only is produced here and in Baltimore.  We will dine at the infamous Mancini’s steak house afterwards.

Hampton, MN

Cost:  Donation of your choice to the monk giving the tour

Watt Munisotaram, (see on FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/WattMunisotaramOfficial) is a Cambodian Buddhist temple, located on a 40-acre plot in rural Hampton, Minnesota.  Driving time to get there is 40 minutes.  This renown temple, which is very ornate and colorful, is extremely unique in the U.S.  This is the largest Buddhist temple in MN.  The campus includes the old temple, which serves as the residence for the monks and priests who live year-round at the temple; an outdoor shrine; a stupa (a building where small relics of the Buddha and two of his disciples are housed); and the main temple: a large building with spaces for meditation and community gatherings. Wear comfortable shoes that you can take off and put on easily.   Must be at the main door for the 9:45-noon tour.

The Lyndale Park Gardens encompass the Peace Garden, Rose Garden, Annual & Perennial Garden, and a Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden. The Peace Garden features hardy alpine plants and dwarf conifers and begins blooming in mid-April. The Annual/Perennial peaks in mid-June and the Rose Garden typically begins blooming in mid-June and lasts until early October. Butterflies and hummingbirds can be seen throughout the summer.

Save the date!  Please join us for our annual festive and fun holiday luncheon.  This will be something special. It’s a wonderful way for us to celebrate our friendship and successful year.  We are fortunate to have use of a beautiful private dining room at Minneapolis Golf Club, adorned with lovely holiday decor and a panoramic view of the outside grounds. 

Cost will be $25 per person. The Wanderers Club will provide beverages, wine, and dessert as a special gift to the membership.

This new activity is a spin-off from conversations at Carol’s garden party. DO-GOODERS DAY: Tuesday, August 2, 1:45 PM Carpool Departure—-Bloomington VEAP  9600 Aldrich Avenue South, Bloomington, MN 55420

VEAP is a basic needs organization whose programs include access to healthy foods, social services, housing stability and supportive services. We will work at the VEAP food shelf from 2:15-5:15. Training is provided. Our commitment to VEAP is the first Tuesday, every other month: August 2, October 4, December 6, February 7. April 4. We will have dinner/Happy Hour at Lucky 13 Pub near Southtown after our service.

A carpool leaves the east side parking lot of the Southtown AMF Bowling Alley at 1:45PM. Please indicate if you plan to carpool or meet us there. If you drive: go around to the west side of the building (overlooking 35W) and park farther back if possible—keep closer rows open for Food Shelf clients. Enter through Door 2 on the west side marked “VEAP Volunteers and Staff.” Wear closed-toed shoes.

Come join this casual Wanderers gathering for conversation and good food. We’ll join a naturalist for an 11-11:45AM tour to learn about the seasonal plants blooming inthis peaceful, 14-acre sanctuary. Founded in 1907, this Garden is the oldest public native plant garden in the United States. More than 500 native plant species grow within the Garden’s woodland, wetland, and prairie habitats. More than 130 resident and migratory bird species travel through or reside within the Garden. Lunch to follow somewhere nearby.

A carpool will leave from the  Hoigard’s parking lot at Miracle Mile Mall at 10:030AM  Please let me know if you plan to be there or will meet us at the garden at 11:00.

Celebrate summer! Come on our annual cruise for 2 hours on beautiful Lake Minnetonka.  Enjoy visiting with members that you have and haven’t met. Take in the magnificent sights of the lake and sip your favorite beverage (cash bar) while enjoying a beautiful buffet of their most popular appetizers. Since 1973 Al & Alma’s has been offering this perfect way to take in the sites and fantastic history of Lake Minnetonka. The captain and crew share stories of the lake, point out beautiful estates, and navigate the shores, channels, many bays and islands on the lake’s 114 miles of shoreline.  

Boarding begins at 6:15pm; boat departs promptly at 6:30pm and returns to port at 8:30pm.
