When Delicious! is abruptly shut down Billie agrees to stay on in the empty office, maintaining the hotline for reader complaints. To her surprise, the lonely job leads to miraculous discovery. In a hidden room she finds a cache of WWII era letters from Lulu Swan, a plucky twelve-year-old, to the legendary chef James Beard. Lulu’s letters provide Billie with a richer understanding of history, and a feeling of deep connection to the young writer whose courage in the face of hardship inspires Billie to comes to terms with her fears, her big sister and her ability to open her heart to love.
Beverages at happy hour prices are available until 7:00 pm.  Feel free to bring food or snacks up form the store.  Weather permitting we’ll be out on the deck. Please come even if you haven’t read the book.

5300 Whiting Ave, Edina, MN.  

Specializing in hostas—with 100’s of varieties to see in their beautiful Display Gardens—they offer mail order and on-site sales of shade-loving plants. Awarded the 2015 Edina Heritage Award, they have been growing hosta’s since 1946. This is their last year at this site.

We will have a potluck salad luncheon at a nearby member’s home following our tour.  Meet there to drop off food and then carpool to the Garden. Or, meet us at the Garden at 10:45AM.

Join us as we walk around Centennial Lakes.  Spring has sprung – so meet us at the “Big Clock” outside of the Hughes Pavilion.  Walk around the lake or as much or as little as your legs allow. Be on time–we’ll start walking promptly!  If it rains – we meet at Southdale outside the Hennepin Country Service Center.

TRIP TO NEW ULM: Is anyone interested in an August day trip or overnight to New Ulm–possibly a Friday?  We’d tour the August Schell Brewery, the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the nation.  They have gorgeous gardens with peacocks strutting about, arbors, roses, annual and perennial beds.  Plus, New Ulm has fun restaurants, lots of cute shops to wander thru and of course we can’t forget about the Hermann the German monument.

He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him ‘the bitter neighbor from hell’. But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

Michael Stolowitzky, the only son of a wealthy Jewish family in Poland, was just three years old when war broke out and the family lost everything. His father, desperate to settle his business affairs, traveled to France, leaving Michael in the care of his mother and Gertruda Bablinska, the family’s devoted Catholic nanny. When Michael’s mother had a stroke, Gertruda promised the dying woman that she would make her way to Palestine and raise him as her own son.

            Things are starting to move into high gear with the countdown to Hanukkah and Christmas underway.

Macy’s is such a great venue – we are going back!  Great food, snacks and a round table too.  Since 1905 Macy’s has been feeding the shopping population.  This is a great place to find regional favorites and outstanding traditional classics.   Proudly presenting a great casual cuisine, the Lakeshore Grill is where you can actually hear people talking to one another – no loud music!  Fabulous appetizers, wine and beer from $3 – $5.   Just come even if you have not read this great book.
