A Note from our President –

            Things are starting to move into high gear with the countdown to Hanukkah and Christmas underway.

So, my annual gift to you is this advice: Let go of just a little this year, and take more time for you! If only I can follow my own advice! Join us at all, or some of the wonderful activities we’ve planned—they’re guaranteed to relieve a little stress, put you in the holiday spirit and help you touch base with busy old and new friends.

People call him ‘the bitter neighbor from hell’. But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

Summer is flying by. These cooler days mean September’s colors will be here soon. That’s the beauty of Minnesota—there’s always another season to look forward to. We’re looking forward to more great seasons as The Wanderers. It’s been an exciting year. Tangletown Gardens is nearby at 5300 Nicollet for those that want to browse afterwards. It is an upmarket garden center with a huge variety of trees, shrubs and plants, plus other garden accessories.

EXPLORERS: Saturday, August, 6^th, 10:00AM Departure—Day trip to Buffalo, MN

Downtown Buffalo Antique Shops & Boutique

Join us for a day trip to shop in Minnesota’s best antique shops and boutiques. The abundant mixture of modern and vintage stores and quaint shops has put Buffalo on the map as a shopper’s paradise. There are shops to explore for several blocks from the lakeshore in downtown Buffalo and north along Central Avenue and 1st Avenue NE. Occasional Sales are the first Thursday through Sunday of each month when the majority of shops are open. Some shops are also open every weekend Thursday through Sunday.

Examples of shops are Bailey & Mae, Bellacoux & Thistle Dew, Fairy House, Gem, Harlow’s House, Jute, Twine & Burlap, Patina General, Second Hand Rose, The Cottage Door, The Porch, This & That and The Lizzie’s Room.

We will cap off the day with happy hour/early dinner at Mill Creek Inn at 891 County Road 35 West. Mill Creek Inn is located on the water and offers great food and drinks at an affordable price.

EXPLORERS: Saturday, July 9^th, 10:15AM Departure—Gangster & Historic Cave Tour

215 Wabasha St S, Saint Paul, MN 55107

The 11:00AM St. Paul Cave tour is a 45 minute walking tour. The cost is $6.00. Come hear the legends of these sandstone caves—mobster massacres and ghostly lore in the most unique setting from Chicago to San Francisco. We’ll explore the original mined caves and see the finished ones (once a romantic night club called The Castle Royal).  If there’s sufficient interest, we will also take the 2-hour Gangster bus tour at noon. The cost is $24.00.  We’ll visit the sites of nightclubs, kidnappings and gun battles associated with 1930’s era gangsters like John Dillinger, Ma Barker and Babyface Nelson.  Optional lunch to follow at Joseph’s Grill,140 South Wabasha, Saint Paul, josephsgrill.com.

INTERNATIONAL EVENING: Thursday, April 21, 7:00 PM – at the home of A Member
Have you ever wondered about “the land down under”???? Did you know that New Zealand was the first country to give women the right to vote? Or that Australia has the most exotic flora and fauna in the world? Anne Shea and Val Hessburg, members of The Wanderers, just returned from a month of touring New Zealand and Australia and are excited to share their travels. They took a plethora of photos just for you. While traveling they were awed at amazing scenery, fabulous festivals, superb food and wine, and magical outdoor experiences. Anne and Val traveled with a group of 14 from The Friendship Force, staying with local country hosts who open up their homes to visitors from other countries and cultures. Unlike most tours, they experienced the culture in both countries at the personal level – sharing meals, conversation and the routines of daily life.
Officers of The Friendship Force, a huge international adult exchange program, will be joining us to share this unique program that was established worldwide over 30 years ago. Being an “ambassador” for the U.S. to other countries or hosting others from another country in your home, allows you to “place faces with places”.

Come join us at Art in Bloom, one of the most popular events at the MIA. Over 125 florists design arrangements to compliment artwork in the permanent collection. There is a public tour of the floral arrangements at 10:15 or we can do our own self guided tour. The flowers are beautiful and the fragrance is lovely. If time permits, there is also a wonderful gift shop to browse. If there’s room, we’ll do lunch at the MIA. It can be a long wait. We’ll decide after the tour to stay or go to lunch nearby.
