Two Old Women, by Velma Wallis

Based on an Athabascan Indian legend passed along for many generations from mothers to daughters of the upper Yukon River Valley in Alaska. This is the suspenseful, shocking, ultimately inspirational tale of two old women abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine.

Though these women have been known to complain more than contribute, they now must either survive on their own or die trying. In simple but vivid detail, Velma Wallis depicts a landscape and way of life that are at once merciless and starkly beautiful. In her old women, she has created two heroines of steely determination whose story of betrayal, friendship, community and forgiveness “speaks straight to the heart with clarity, sweetness and wisdom.” Feel free to bring food or snacks up from the store.  Happy Hour prices at bar until 7PM.  Please come even if you haven’t read the book.

The Atomic Weight of Love by Elizabeth J. Church

This book spans the years from WW II through the Vietnam War telling the story of a woman whose scientific ambition is caught up in her relationships with two very different men.  For Meridian Wallace, and many other smart, driven women of the 1940s, being ambitious meant being an outlier. Ever since childhood, Meridian had been obsessed with birds, and she was determined to get her PhD, become an ornithologist, and make her mother’s sacrifices to send her to college pay off.

NIGHT-TIME BOOK TALK: Monday, May 20th, 7:00PM—Byerlys Mezz

Lunds and Byerlys, France/Hazelton Rd.

The Beet Queen,by Louise Erdrich

On a spring morning in 1920, young Karl and Mary Adare arrive by boxcar in Argus, ND. After being orphaned in a most peculiar way, Mary seeks refuge in the butcher shop of their aunt and uncle, while Karl gets back on the train. So begins an exhilarating 40-year saga brimming with colorful, unforgettable characters: ordinary Mary, who’ll cause a miracle, seductive Karl, who lacks his sister’s gift for survival; Sita, their lovely but disturbed cousin; and the half-Native American Celestine James, who will become Mary’s best friend. Theirs is a story grounded in the tenacity of relationships, the extraordinary magic of natural events, and the mystery of the human condition.
